Self catering suits a family or a longer stay in Cahir. Finding it is harder than it should be. There is a small genuine stock of houses and cottages in and around the town, and a much larger number of listings on aggregator sites that are not self catering at all.
What is actually here
Boolakennedy Cottages are farm cottages outside the town, Failte Ireland approved, and are the most straightforward proper self catering option near Cahir. Farm setting, a real kitchen, and the sort of place that suits a week rather than a night.
Hollymount House sits above the town on the side of the hill with views over Cahir and the castle, and does self catering as well as bed and breakfast. Annaswood at Ballylooby, a few miles out, does the same.
Beyond those, the supply is holiday houses let privately and whatever is on the short term rental platforms at the time you look. It changes constantly and no page can usefully list it.
The aggregator problem
Search for self catering in Cahir and you will be shown Cahir House Hotel. It is a hotel. It is a good hotel, covered on its own page, but it is not a house with a kitchen, and the listing sites categorise it as self catering because their categories are loose rather than because anything is being misrepresented deliberately.
The same happens with bed and breakfasts that have one self contained room. Before you book, check three things: whether there is a kitchen you can actually cook in, whether the space is yours alone, and whether anyone else is in the building. If the listing will not tell you plainly, ring.
Choosing where
Cahir is compact, so anywhere described as being in the town genuinely is walkable to the Square, the castle and the shops. Anything on the hill or out a country road will need the car for everything, including bread. That is fine for a week with children and less fine for a couple of nights.
If you want to walk out the door into the town, take something central and small. If you want space, quiet and a view, take something out and accept the driving.
Practical
Bring or buy for the first evening. Cahir has shops for a proper restock, and takeaway food in Cahir for the night you arrive too late to cook. For the days, things to do in Cahir and walking cover most of it.
Book well ahead for July and August, and for any bank holiday weekend. There are not many units and they go.
