An eighteen hole course in the town, and three more inside half an hour. Enough for a few days if golf is the reason for the trip.
Cahir Park Golf Club
Cahir Park is an 18-hole parkland course on the Cashel road, laid out along the banks of the River Suir. It plays to a par of 71 over about 6,461 yards, which is a fair test without being punishing, and the setting is the thing people remember: the river runs through the property and the Galtee, Knockmealdown and Comeragh mountains stand behind it in three directions.
Parkland on a river means two things worth planning for. The ground holds water after a wet spell, and the river is in play more often than the yardage suggests.
It is a welcoming club rather than a closed one, and visitors are part of how it works. Contact the club directly for green fees, tee times and visitor arrangements, since all of those change through the season.
Getting there
The course is on the Cashel road just outside the town, a couple of minutes from Junction 10 of the M8. That location is the quiet advantage of golf here: Cork, Waterford and Limerick are all around fifty minutes away and Dublin is under two hours, so Cahir Park is an easy stop on a longer golfing trip rather than a detour.
Other courses within reach
Clonmel Golf Club is twenty minutes east, up on the slopes above the town, and is the best known course in the immediate area. Tipperary Golf Club is about half an hour northwest. Mitchelstown Golf Club is a similar distance southwest over the county line into Cork.
Between those and Cahir Park you have four contrasting parkland courses inside a half hour radius, which is a reasonable basis for a few days without moving hotel.
Making a trip of it
Cahir works well as a golfing base because the town is compact and the courses radiate out from it. Hotels in Cahir, bed and breakfast in Cahir and self catering in Cahir cover the beds, and the best places to eat in Cahir and the pubs cover the evenings.
For the non-golfers in the party, things to do in Cahir has the castle, the Swiss Cottage and the riverside walk, all of which fit neatly into a morning round.
